This section highlights some of the hard skills I have developed through my education and professional experiences. These are only a few examples of the technical abilities I continue to build throughout my career.
I have experience with Adobe Premiere Pro, having used it to edit videos for academic, professional and personal projects. I can edit and produce a final product with footage, cuts and edits, text, transitions, music, and audio levels. Working with Premiere Pro has improved my attention to detail, creativity and ability to convey information visually. This skill will be useful in my future career as professional sports organizations utilize video content heavily for marketing, social media, promotions and fan engagement.
Microsoft Excel is another skill I have developed through my studies and practical experience. I can manipulate data, create tables and graphs, use formulas, sort and filter and present results in an easily understood way. I’ve developed an eye for details through Excel and learned how data can show trends and lead to more informed decision making. I will find this skill very useful in my career pursuit in data analysis and may also be useful in evaluating information for sports business.
My Economics coursework and experience with Microsoft Excel has provided me with data analysis skills. I can organize information, compare results, recognize patterns and explain findings clearly using tables or charts. These skills have enabled me to see how data can help inform business decisions and not just assumptions. Data analysis correlates directly to my future goal of becoming a data analyst and could also help me analyze financial, marketing, operational, or performance information while working in the front office of a professional sports organization.
This section gives a glimpse of some of the soft skills I have developed through my education, work, internships and volunteer experiences. These are just some of the personal qualities I am still developing as I prepare for my future career.
My problem solving skills have been honed by situations that have demanded quick responses and responsible decisions. As an Operations Manager I often dealt with unforeseen staffing issues, changing priorities, and work that still had to get done on time. For example, in a blizzard when three employees were unable to make it in I changed the plan and personally shoveled the parking lots at all four locations before opening. I learned from such experiences that the best thing to do when problems occur is to stay calm, think of solutions and act. I will be able to apply this skill to solve problems in data analysis and in the front office of a professional sports organization.
I have learned to be very adaptable working in environments where responsibilities and priorities could change quickly. I worked the front desk at Shore Fitness, taking care of membership questions, billing issues, cleaning tasks, and opening and closing duties as needed for each shift. I also took a fitness class when the trainer wasn’t available. These experiences have taught me to stay calm, to learn new responsibilities and to help out wherever I can. As I move forward in my career, I know adaptability is a great skill to have because sports organizations and data based positions need employees who can quickly respond to new information, challenges, and changing priorities.
In regards to my development in critical thinking, I am now able to think critically because I always look at situations critically before making any decision. My experience in Economics class and my work experience has taught me to look at the available information, weigh the various options and see how the different choices can influence other people. With such thinking I was able to use it in the case of Shore Fitness in the management of membership, billing and scheduling problems.
